When the Career Shift you Need is Within the Company

When the Career Shift you need is Within the Company

Moving Out isn’t always the right career strategy. I’ve recently had two client interactions that really reinforced this for me.

Career mentoring is often seen as helping someone move out of a company — but sometimes, the best solution is helping that change happen within your current organization.

👥 Two real client stories

  • One wanted more money and fewer days in the office.
  • One had just gone through a big restructure and found himself at odds with his new manager.
  • When I probed further, neither of them actually wanted to leave their companies!

🚪 Not every challenge means you need to leave

There’s a lot of value in staying with a company for more than a couple of years — and the longer you stay, and perform, the more valuable you become.

🔍 Are you looking outside because you’re …

  • - worth more money
  • - needing to be closer to home / home more often
  • - Wanting new experiences or skills
  • - Craving more interesting, stimulating work
  • - Churning after a structure change, feeling undervalued or threatened
  • Here’s the thing: most of these can be solved with the right conversation.

🗣 Crafting a pivotal career conversation

This is a skill I help my clients with — and it’s often worth the effort.

If you enjoy your company, like the culture and values, and have been doing well, it’s smart to look inside first.

A known, trusted employee who consistently adds value is a real asset — and companies will often try to meet you at least halfway.

So before you take the leap out
👉 Think again about what could be possible within.

🧭 How to have these pivotal conversations

There are 3 classic steps:

1️ Brainstorm your goals — and how to make them win–win. Write this down.
2️
Book a meeting with your manager. Call it a Career Conversation.
3️
Prepare! Review your proposal a few times, and brainstorm with someone experienced and wise.

⚠️ Important:
Keep it professional, calm, and pleasant.

Coach yourself on how to achieve this — or ask your “wise person” for help.

Your company may not be able to give you what you need…
But it’s always worth having the conversation.

Good luck!
And call me if you’d like me to be your “wise person".
